| | | | | | One (common and patronizing) view people take of children is that they are a lump of clay needing to be molded - by the parents and the society. Another view that some people take is that the child is already full of energy, designs, potential, and joy, waiting to be understood and discovered by the parents and society. Come join us, if you want to explore the what and how of the second (limitless) view.
We were splashing in the gushing waters of the mountain river. Our 5year old daughter suddenly stood up and started trekking upstream - slippery uphill task ahead. I asked, “Where are you off to?” “To find some challenges” was her plain reply.
In our 22 years of working with children - all we have heard every child say is, "Hey, I can literally raise myself, if you let me. All I need is a balanced diet of all kinds of good / bad experiences, of failures and successes, of trials and tribulations, of challenges, et al. I have a tummy full of strengths, which can digest the nutritious and excrete the unwanted. When you allow me to live my life, then life raises me. I am able, let me be.
One day we gave a piece of newspaper to a group of children and adults and asked the group to make caps out of it. Most (children and adults) waited for the instructions! But no instructions came. Finally most made the caps without instructions. And almost all caps were of a different design. The idea was to look into self for help. The thought was "Do I know my own unlimited capacity?'
The question we want to leave you dear reader is, “What kind of subservience have we created in children?” | | | | JAGRITI - an online UnParenting UnLearning program for parents and teachers - giving you fresh perspectives into children and their learning, growing journey.
While what you know and have been doing as a parent is correct, there are atleast 50 more ways of seeing the same thing. When we open up our windows, we get to see new vistas. Automatically, these new perspectives lead us to respond to and work with our children in different and perhaps much more effective ways. The child, in the end, is a huge beneficiary. That we start enjoying our working with the child is a nice side benefit.
